What the Chiefs-Rams offensive shootout classic means for the Bengals

That was an unbelievable football game Monday night.

It felt like watching a Big 12 or Pac12 game. It was just that good.

I literally had to ask myself if this was the NFL I was watching.

The future of the NFL was on display in that game, and some teams need to take notes.

Hmmm hmmm, the Bengals!

It’s so funny that Monday I was thinking with all the changes that are coming to NFL offenses, the Bengals are falling farther and farther behind.

The talk the last few weeks has been the atrocity that is the Bengals defense.

While I understand that talk, is the defense honestly going to win the Bengals games in this NFL? NO!

The way teams win football games in today’s NFL is by scoring points, and a whole lot of them.

Bill Lazor is a creative offensive coordinator, but he needs to be even more creative if the Bengals want any chance of competing for a Super Bowl championship.

The new generation of quarterbacks is arriving, and it is led by Patrick Mahomes and Jared Goff.

I remember reading an article in Sports Illustrated a while back talking about college quarterbacks not being able to make the transition to the NFL and its offenses.

But as more dynamic quarterbacks entered college football, NFL offense started to adapt their systems to them.

Gone are the days where quarterbacks just sit in the pocket, go through their progressions and then throw to who’s most open.

Now quarterbacks are playing in creative offenses with the freedom to do essentially whatever they want on any play, including running out of the pocket and spreading the defense out.

Andy Dalton is in his eighth season, and I have always felt like he has been just a hair below the great and elite quarterbacks.

He is in the prime of his career, so to speak. These will be his peak years, and it started in 2015.

But if he is going to have any winning success, the Bengals need to evolve their offense.

I just don’t think it’s as athletic as teams like the Chiefs, Rams or Saints.

Even the Browns offense, which the Bengals will face Sunday is catching up to the other great ones in the NFL.

Look at them; they have a young dynamic quarterback in Baker Mayfield and the organization has given some weapons around him.

So as the rest of the NFL is adapting to a new game, to me, the Bengals continue to fall behind it all.

The defense can be criticized as much as possible, but the offense must evolve if this team wants to even sniff success.
