MACON, Ga. — From scintillating comebacks to dominant wins, week two of the NFL season had it all.
A week that started with the Chiefs announcing they are still the team to beat in the AFC West and ended with the Bills announcing they are just as good as their offseason hype, several players posted incredible performances. Here is this week’s top four.
4. Jalen Hurts – QB, Philadelphia Eagles (26/31, 331 yds, TD, INT; 11 rush for 57 yds and 2 TD)
One of the gutsiest decisions in the NFL in recent years was then Eagles head coach Doug Pederson moving off quarterback Carson Wentz and replacing him with then unproven rookie Jalen Hurts. Heading into last year, I didn’t know exactly what direction the Eagles were heading in. But after Monday night, they’re heading towards, perhaps, a very successful season here in 2022.
Hurts shouldn’t be this good of a quarterback. He doesn’t look the part. And yet, he’s playing like one. He throws a really nice ball, he runs hard, and he’s got Philadelphia’s offense humming early in the season. While I do worry about the Eagles being able to keep their foot on the gas in the second half of games- they didn’t score at all in the second half Monday night- if you don’t slow down Hurts and the Eagles offense early, good luck coming back on them because they will drain the clock with their style of offense.
3. Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle – WRs, Miami Dolphins (Hill: 11 rec., 190 yds, 2 TD; Waddle: 11 rec., 171 yds, 2 TD)
These two put on a show on Sunday, and they cemented themselves as the best receiver duo in the NFL. They complement each other well. Waddle can fly down the sideline. Hill can too, and he can also catch and run like no other receiver in the NFL. With these two receivers, the Dolphins are now able to take the top off of defenses and Tua can finally throw down the field with confidence.
2. Tua Tagovailoa – QB, Miami Dolphins (36/50, 469 yds, 6 TD, 2 INT)
Speaking of Tagovailoa, he entered this season with so many questions and so much to prove, and he went out there on Sunday and did just that. Think about it: down 21 in the fourth quarter on the road at Baltimore and he is chucking the ball over the field to his best playmakers. The Dolphins went all in on him with a new head coach and new weapons and he is returning huge on the organization’s investment.
1. Stefon Diggs – WR, Buffalo Bills (12 rec., 148 yds, 3 TD)
Diggs’s stats through the first two games: 20 rec., 273 yds, 4 TD. Ridiculous. He is a big-time wide receiver who can absolutely fly. And in this offense, his potential is other-worldly. In a league where Cooper Kupp, Davante Adams and Ja’Marr Chase grab all the headlines, it’s Diggs who might be making an early push for offensive player of the year.
